Lovely Kansas

After about five and a half hours of driving across the ever so scenic Illinois and Missouri, we ended up at Abby’s Uncle Lee and Aunt Lori’s house just south of Kansas City. They have such a beautiful home on 6 acres of land with an awesome view. For those of you lucky enough to know Lee and Lori already know how kind and accommodating they are. They welcomed us in with open arms and cooked an amazing dinner of burgers and baked mac & cheese, not to mention the three-course breakfast ready for us the next morning and the towels and soap set out for us in the bathrooms. It was truly like being at a fancy hotel. We can’t thank them enough and it was the perfect start to our long trip. You can also thank Lee for inspiring us to write this blog!

After the huge breakfast, we embarked on our journey to Denver across what seemed like the longest state ever, Kansas. To break up the drive and to add some excitement, we planned some novelty stops along the way. The first stop was the giant concrete teepee in Lawrence, KS. After initially overlooking it, we discovered it was actually a place you could rent for parties. The coolest part of the teepee was the lines painted on the side marking how high the water rose during two floods! After the teepee, we continued on to Topeka. While it was hot, it didn’t deter us from checking out the Equality House and its baffling neighbor, the Westboro Baptist Church. Don’t worry, we made sure to donate a couple dollars to the rainbow box. Also on our way to the equality house, we found the midwest’s version of the Statue of Liberty…? Our last stop on this leg of the trip was at the Czech Capital of Kansas, Wilson - Home of the world’s largest Czech egg. This sizable monument was pretty darn egg-celent. Unfortunately for us, this was the last novelty stop before finishing off the last 6 hours of the drive to where we sit right now, Denver.
